On Monday November 6th from 9.30 – 13.30 it is possible to visit Maria Montessori’s grave in Noordwijk in the vicinity of The Hague. Also the house where she died on May 6th, 1952 when she was 81 years old can be visited. Prior to this visit there will be a PowerPoint Presentation on the house and the grave in the Haags Montessori Lyceum, Nassau Bredastraat 5, The Hague.
Maria and Mario Montessori fled from Barcelona (Spain) where they lived in 1936 when the Spanish Civil War started. Finally they lived in a little villa in Laren (N.H.), called De Binckhorst, in the vicinity of Amsterdam. In that house Maria Montessori founded a Casa dei Bambini and finally they owned a School, a Training Centre and a Study Centre in a school called Groenendaal in Laren.
In 1939 Maria and Mario paid a visit to India, which was meant to last for a couple of weeks in order to give a course there. This turned out to be a stay for several years until 1946. They were Italian citizens and Italy was an enemy of the United Kingdom during the Second World War. The Britons ruled India in those years. After their return to the Netherlands in 1946 the Montessoris lived in Amsterdam at Koninginneweg 161.
Occasionally the Montessoris stayed in Noordwijk, in a beach house called Het Huis aan Zee for a short time. During such a stay Maria Montessori suddenly died of a stroke. As she had decided in her will, she was buried in the town where she died.
